Daycare-itis: The Pox Upon My House

Another week almost gone and once again we've been battling the "daycare-itis". Daycare-itis? You know, the constant stream of snot and sniffles that plagues children who dare mingle with other people's children. The Pox of the Working Mom.

Since Sassy started daycare in January we've had more snot filled days than not. Two weeks after she started, she came down with a vicious case of RSV. A few weeks after that it was more snot, and then some more and so on and so forth. Every time we get her well and think we might have a snot-free week BAM the snots are back. We go to the doctor who tells me for the eleventy-billionth time in 8 months that she's sorry but there's nothing we can do except suck out the snot and go about our business.

At first, I was the good mom who kept her snot-nosed brat home so the other kids didn't get sick but quickly learned that if I did this I'd use up all my paid time off in no time flat. Not to mention the fact that Sassy is a good girl who likes to share...her germs. So when Sassy's not sick Momma is or even worse, Daddy is. At that's where we are today, Momma is sick and has been all week. If you were to crack open my skull right now (and I'll thank you in advance for not doing so) you'd probably find this guy
That's Slimer from Ghostbusters, y'all remember him?
You'll probably find him chillaxin' on a barka-lounger with those nasty mucus-men from the Mucinex commercials (good drugs, disgusting name. Why not just call it Snot-Be-Gone??)

I am SO completely over daycare-itis! I've considered trying to find a new daycare, one that doesn't let you drop off your snot-nosed brat to get the other kids sick but do those even exist? Would I get lucky enough to find one that we could afford and actually get her in before the next round of daycare-itis strikes? Is it just us or are all parents dealing with the daycare-itis? Are any of our immune systems ever going to be able to fight off the daycare-itis once and for all? Does anyone have a tissue?

This is just the hardest thing...you have tough decisions to make in life, but none as worrisome as where when how and why to relinquish your babies to another! The germs. Well, they are with us always! I am old...and still get sick when the grands share with me. The little one is just an industrial strength germ-inator!

Oh lord, you are a Vols fan! The mortal enemy of the Kentucky fan, but I like ya anyway! Sounds like you need an in home day care situation. Good luck! Cam had RSV when he was 8 months old, and was air lifted...it's when RSV was new, and he was in ICU for a week...very scary!

Hi-
Saw you this post at VB and had to respond. Both my kids have been in daycare since they were about 9 months. Both are sick every two weeks it seems. Maddening. I was starting to be convinced that the toys were dripping with snot/hadn't been cleaned since last the W administration. But as all dr.s will tell you, such is the lot of kids in daycare. I am hoping that my older one starts to see the benefits of all these colds fevers , RSV, Hand, Foot Mouth, etc. when he starts preschool on Tuesday.

Ah, daycare....

I swear the military could learn a thing or two about germ warfare by studing any American daycare. My kids had it bad the first year but now they could lick the phone reciever in bus stop during cold and flu season and be fine!
Wee 'Burb had some of this at her center daycare, but oddly I feel like it got worse at home daycare! She was home with me way more...although it's not out of the question that the home daycare just realized it first because she was one of 5 dripping snott instead of 1 of 20. But like the previous commenter said, at some point it's done. I noticed around 18 months or so, it tapered off. I mean, Wee 'Burb tends to get snotty, but it's not contagious snotty and it's not as constant.
I can so relate to this post! Once she started a toddler program, she was constantly sick. The next year, however, she got sick only once. Unfortunately, they need to get sick to build up their immune system. I wish there was a better way:(

Hopefully we're getting close to the end of the constant sickness cycle! She moves up to the next room in daycare where the kids are walking etc. I'm hoping that being out of the room with all the kids who are crawling and teething (so they drool on everything) will help cut down on the amount of germs running amuck.
Keeping our kiddos germ free is insanely frustrating and after raising 5 kiddos, I 've seen enough green boogers than I care to remember. The only hope I can offer you is.... this too shall pass! Thanks for following At Home with Rebecka and sharing your lovely blog!

At my son's school there is always someone with a cough or runny nose, the school would probably close down if your child had to be 100% healthy to go. It is forever ongoing....just wait til winter! SMH
Good luck out there. Take care of yourself too....those kid germs are tough especially on adults!

I'm with ya here. Mine has had about 4 ear infections so far this year on top of multiple colds. She's currently in the "this might be a cold" state with a consistently runny nose and sneezing. The problem with keeping your snot nose home is that by the time there are symptoms, they have usually been contagious for about 48 hours :( so there's really no avoiding it. on the plus side, by the time our kids are 2 I hear that they will rarely if ever get sick bc of their strong immunity. Let's bank on that, k?

It is not really easy to cope most especially when kids start to go to school. But I know you can handle the pressure and changes. I know kids will really be able to learn a lot and school is actually fun and exciting for them.

You have faced terrible experience. You should make a report to give your child to that center. Not all centers are professional. Best daycare center needs to be professional, to have many staff, and should be cleaned properly. Give a look here for a visit.
Where do you begin, and how can you make the search easier? How can you make a comparison of different providers in a compassionate, yet logical way that satisfies both peace of mind and financial responsibility?adult day programs
